L'Oliva rural house. Coll de Nargó
Renovation and adaptation of a historic farmhouse for rural tourism
The project involves the adaptation of a family farmhouse as short-term tourist accommodation - a comprehensive project in a type of property that has historically linked both the home and the countryside.
The house sits at a high altitude, at the foot of the Roca dels Castellassos - an imposing rocky massif that protects it from inclement weather - in a green landscape of fields and native forests, which are typical of the pre-Pyrenean mountain range.
The project provides the house with a new functional layout: a leisure area and entrance on the ground floor, rooms for daytime use on the first floor, and bedrooms on the upper floors.
To achieve this, an essential decision in its design was to propose a new location for the switchback staircase, which now acts as the central nucleus of the house, and is both visually light and open-plan, allowing natural light to filter in along its length.
With the clear intention of improving the spatial quality of the farmhouse, and despite having inherited narrow rooms with low ceilings, architectural devices are used to achieve spaces that are more fluid and open-plan.
